My Hackintosh Dell PC.

It took me three days to do this. If you don’t understand, Macintosh is only sold and meant to be used on Apple Computers. The Operating System, MacOSX, doesn’t work with PC’s made for Windows. So, I had to spend hours installing crazy cracked MacOSX installs and finding drivers for my computer to work, but look, a Mac Laptop for about 500 dollars (The cheapest one on Apple.com is $999).

I’m really intrigued by this formfactor.

And if they had this type of UI, like this Courier one, which supposedly, comes from Microsoft, I would immediately look at buying one.

EDIT: I accidentally put the first video twice, now it has the courier one.

“The reason the US is going to shit is not the gov’t, it’s the people.

So, I was browsing the front page, and noticed the NYTimes article on ammonia-treated beef. This brought to mind Upton Sincair’s “The Jungle,” which in turn made me wonder: what the fuck is our deal? How are we regressing as a culture?

Why do we seem to be plagued with 3rd-world country problems when we should be, by all rights, near (or at) the very top of the quality-of-life index?

I’ve been mulling this over for quite a while, and here’s where I’m at. I’m curious to get feedback.

Why do we allow ourselves to be taken advantage of? Wall Street bailout, wildly unpopular wars, no universal healthcare, we basically just roll over and take it. In France, the entire country came to a standstill because of protests and whatnot over some relatively small changes to the eduction system. Could you ever imagine anything happening like that here? Look back at the 60s and the anti-vietnam war movement. Aside from some mostly symbolic marches in major cities, what have we done to show our discontent with the whole Iraq/Afghanistan thing?

The problem is us.

We don’t give a fuck.

I’d like to say the education system is to blame, but the reality of it is that people in the US have never really valued education. We deride people who are academically-inclined or educated, we praise the “self-made man” who made something of himself without the need for formal training, we call them nerds, book-worms. No, we don’t value education, we don’t value culture, we rejected everything the “old world” taught us - threw the baby out with the bath-water, so now all we have left is an obscene culture of self-indulgence, self-gratification and self-obsession.

We’d be off oil in a month if we wanted, if we really truly wanted. But instead we watch our blu-ray DVDs in front of our nice new black friday purchased plasma screen TV (pointing the finger squarely at myself here), maybe throw $10 at some charity so we can look ourselves in the mirror and not want to vomit from disgust.

But in the end, it all falls squarely on our shoulder.

The reason this country is going to shit is because you and I, we’re not willing to give up our creature comforts, not willing to get off our asses and do something about it. Even this post is nothing more than verbal masturbation, pointing out our shortcomings without offering any real solution or action to take.

So maybe it’s time we all started making some hard choices, and started taking a more active role in our own lives.

If you live in the suburbs, you’re the problem. If you buy cheap food/goods, you’re the problem. If you don’t vote, you’re the problem. If you don’t take an active role in your community, you’re the problem. No one is going to make your life better for you except for yourself.

tl;dr: We’re letting everyone shit on us. Start doing things yourself to make a difference, or stop complaining.

My 2009 in a nutshell.

connieluu:

Since today is the last day of 2009, I started thinking about anything different things that happened this year. The only thing that sticks out is how I’m pretty much desensitized to everything gross on the internet with one exception.

  • Meatspin - Yeah, Meatspin is old, but it wasn’t until this year that it stopped shocking me. Now the only reason I freak out when it’s on my laptop is that I don’t want to accidentally open it around adults or other people that aren’t my cousins or else they’d think I was watching porn.
  • Lemon Party - Same thing with Meatspin.
  • 2 Girls 1 Cup - I haven’t seen this video this year, but it probably wouldn’t disgust me as much anyways since it’s fake.
  • 3 Guys 1 Hammer - It’s sad that I was so desensitized up to this point that I felt nothing when watching this video. I felt bad for the guy, yeah, and the guys in the video are fucking insane, but I wasn’t disgusted or horrified like I should be.
  • 71 Man Omelette - I’m unsure of the exact title, but this video didn’t even disgust me. It was just surprising what went down in the video.

The exception:

  • Salsa Snack - This will disgust me forever! I can stand seeing anything else but this. The girl in the video shits out a turd and shoves it in her vag. Then she continues to smear poop on her face or something. I don’t even remember anything but the turd in the vag part because I kept looking away.

If you’ve seen or heard of these videos, you probably think I’m disgusting. It’s not like I looked up these videos or enjoy them. People randomly show them to me and it’s stuck in my mind forever.

This is the only part of 2009 that I can remember clearly because these videos/pictures/etc cannot be unseen. Of course there are other parts of 2009 that I could write about, but it wouldn’t be entertaining.

although I hate how most tumblr posts are reblogs of a reblog of a reblog, I have to fullheartedly agree with this.

Why Twitter is Useless

  • Many users use it as an instant messaging service; they use twitter to broadcast a two person conversation for all to read. Although they are already on their phone, where they can easily text the other person, or on their computer, where they can e-mail, IM, comment, etc., they happen to desire to feel that everyone needs to pay attention to their conversation.
  • Not many people care for what every other person is doing at every moment in time. I read somewhere that “Twitter is good for finding out what someone had for lunch.” Many tweets are just a telling of what they’re about to do, doing, or what they just did. What is the purpose of telling all your friends you just ate a great meal, or just bought something, etc. etc. What real purpose and importance does this have and why do you believe that it needs to be broadcasted to all your friends? Do you feel that you are entitled to everyone’s attention, all the time?
  • There was so much potential, which was ruined by too much socializing. I thought it was cool, during the summer, when on the news they read off the tweets from the protesters of Iran; they seemed to use the tweets to spread urgent news, meeting places, and really reflect the state of the public mind. However, this is not how the average user sees twitter. Currently, two of the main trends are Avatar and Sherlock Holmes. And they all probably look like this: “Avatar was awesome!” or “Sherlock Holmes was awesome!”
  • Superfluous amounts of complaining. It seems that Twitter became a tool to complain to all your friends. Everyone’s L’s are F’d on Twitter due to their homework, parents, college applications, etc. And the question arises again, who cares? Is Twitter just being used as another way to make yourself feel important? The feeling that everyone is reading what you’re doing at every instant?

For many people, it probably does have a good use. For people with a bunch of followers, it can give an easy way to update their fans on what’s been going on. For big companies, they can release their new and breaking information on it. For a group of people, it’s kind of like a messageboard, easily read and accessible to all its members. But, a celebrity would have their own fanpage for that. A big company would release their breaking news on their own website. And a group could easily use Facebook for more than just statuses.

It’s kind of the same for Tumblr. I just don’t see the point of broadcasting every little thing I find interesting or cool. It seems like the average Tumblr user is just passing along information and sharing it (ie. just reblogging everything cool they see).

A New Decade

I ended the 90’s a seven year old; I didn’t know shit about anything. I didn’t know anything about girls, or politics, or nature, or war, or molecules, or space, or life. Now it’s the end of the 00’s, I’m seventeen and I still don’t know.

In the last ten years, I feel like all I learned was basic physics, calculus, and how to masturbate (Thanks, Dad!).

I haven’t gotten my hoverboard, lightsaber, hologram machine, flying car, or personal robot yet. I just hope that in the 10’s decade I get all of these things and more. I mean, I remember in 1999, people were ranting and raving about how 2000 is the future. If that’s true, what are we getting into now? The doublefuture? What the hell is going to happen?

In 1999, I had 56k Dial-up. Downloading music took like 30 minutes a single song. Now, the internet connection on my cellphone is faster than that. I haven’t used a CD to listen to music in years. I haven’t seen a cassette tape in even more. In 1999, Michael Jackson was alive.

Oh, I forgot, we have a half-black dude as the President. How can 2010 follow such an act?

If you compare basically everything from 1999 to 2009, you’ll see that everything is cooler. Man, the 10’s are going to be so cool.

Global Warming

I see two extremes of the worst possible outcomes

  1. We spend a lot of time and money towards making things green, efficient, and less harmful. Wind-energy, hydroelectric power, and solar energy become prominent alternatives to coal, gasoline, etc. Asthma and other environmentally caused diseases are reduced. Animals die-out at lesser rates. There is worldwide unification towards saving the human population. Or…
  2. Everyone dies.

I don’t know; the choice is so hard.
